Theatre practitioner Arundhati Raja has transitioned from balancing teaching in the sciences with theatre to focusing exclusively on theatre. Currently preparing for her English adaptation of Girish Karnad's Kannada classic, "Hittina Hunja — Bali: The Sacrifice," she reflects on revisiting a play after years, the challenges she has encountered, and her aspirations for the future of theatre. Raja shares her insights on utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the directing process for "Bali," and discusses the evolution of English theatre in Bengaluru, highlighting the shift towards Indianized productions and translations of local language plays. Emphasizing the collaborative nature of theatre, Raja underscores the importance of training and immersive character portrayal in creating a cohesive ensemble performance.Audiences are quick to dismiss plays after a single viewing, yet they are willing to watch multiple disappointing films. Theatre is a challenging form of entertainment, as individuals who do not enjoy a play may not be open to giving theatre another try. In contrast, the same audience members are more likely to give movies another chance despite previous disappointments. Additionally, there is a prevailing misconception that theatre is either dull or solely for intellectuals, which does not reflect the diverse and engaging nature of theatrical productions.
